About English Wine Project

Ex- army captain Kieron Atkinson shifted his career from leading troops in Afghanistan to winemaking in 2010, and he’s been championing the English wine industry ever since.

Today, Derby-based Kieron produces multiple award-winning wines made from grapes grown at Renishaw Hall Vineyard in Derbyshire; but it was back in 2007 when in Afghanistan with his regiment that Kieron decided to change tack from life in the military and embark in a career in viticulture.

“After nine rewarding years in the army and tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, I’d become very aware of the importance of making the most of life. I wanted to do something totally different and knew I wanted to produce something myself, so I went back to uni to learn about wine making and vineyard management. Six years later and many thousand bottles of wine under my belt, it’s been a career shift I have found both challenging and great fun in equal measures”

says Kieron, who, after graduating from the UK’s only dedicated wine production learning centre, took on the historic Renishaw Hall Vineyard – for many years the most northerly vineyard in the world.

“It’s great seeing people really enjoy my wine which is grown and produced here in Derbyshire – yet recognised on a global platform for its quality. More and more local places across the region now stock the wines, as there’s a general shift towards supporting good, English wines and widening people’s perception of what’s out there. The Decanter awards are a great boost, blind-tasted and judged by Masters of Wine from across the globe. To see my Derbyshire wines beating the likes of Champagnes and other French wines to win awards is really satisfying and worth all the hard graft over the past few years!”

Kieron’s wines now include Decanter World Wine Award-winners Madeline Angevine (still white), Seyval Blanc (sparkling white) and Seyval Blanc Rondo (sparkling rosé) wines; as well as a range of other still and sparkling wines, all made from grapes grown in Derbyshire and hand-picked at harvest.

Vineyard tours take place throughout the year also and are a really popular afternoon out.
